Sun 11 Jan to Sun 25 Jan, 11am to 7pmAdmission Free
How does the artistic impulse get translated into a work of art? How does an artist process all the sensations of his surroundings into feelings and thoughts which he then syncretises into his body of work? Four young Malaysian artists –
Haslin Ismail, Fawwaz, Muhd Sarip and Hafiz Yahaya – recent fine art graduates of UiTM who have exhibited in various acclaimed group shows in recent years, take us from sensation to feeling to canvas and back to sensation in
Rasa TeRasa.

Rasa Terasa
Every ear sees a different sound, every tongue hears a different flavour, every eye tastes a different image. As each person experiences the world differently throughout his lifetime, so does each artist approach his art uniquely. When all taste, flavour and image have been totaled and accounted for, aesthetic and ideological differences fall away as does the gap between emotion and thought. But what is it that is felt and dreamt by each and every artist? Is there even a need for an answer, when all sensation is equally real in the journey towards the miracle of the senses?+
Art is beautiful, whether seen through the naked eye or the eye of the soul. But beauty itself is subjective, whereby all opinion about its true nature defers to the opinions of society, academia, politics, religion and most importantly one’s own personal viewpoint. What is perceived as beautiful by one person may not be the same for another. It is this personal difference in perception that is most important for an artist while creating his works of art.
All that is in the mind, is released energetically within the personal space (illusion), and against a more open space (physical). The feeling that is felt is poured, hammered, patched, cut, spread, placed and so on, to communicate the urgency of what is felt to both artist and audience. The feelings of wanting to feel and what is felt are transferred from the soul (qalbu) of the artist to his mind (aqlu) and channeled as an energy to his entirety to manifest in reality what was once just a feeling.
His sensitive emotions (artist) toward his environment will take the artist in an honest artistic direction where he can absorb what passes through his senses and arrange them randomly before embarking on a more structured form whereby all emotion, experience, scholarship and movements both spontaneous and deliberate are brought together to create the works of art.
Rasa TeRasa is an amalgam of the thoughts of four young artists who have produced works individually in the past few years. All their ideas and presentations represent the events that have happened around the artists. What is felt and what the artists feel are expressed in visual form to pose an inquiry about their surroundings. The questions that arise don’t need answers but it’s enough if they generate honest debate and discussion.
For those who are watching, we invite you to ponder how it feels and what is felt...
